Wireless medical devices have become ubiquitous within the healthcare industry. The need for electronic medical records almost necessitates that any device connected to a patient must also be connected to a network. Having nearly a decade pass since the ratification of the IEEE 802.11b standard, wireless network connectivity of medical devices has become a lucrative and popular option. ABI research predicts that Wi-Fi in healthcare will total $4.19 billion in 2014, an increase of 70 percent from today’s figure. This is in part due to a projected $20 billion in government stimulus funds. Read more

Phoenix Health and Medsphere to Deliver IT Outsourcing Services and Open Source EHR Solution to Critical Access Hospital

Columbia Basin Hospital (CBH) has roped in Phoenix Health Systems for its Total IT Solution service line under a five-year contract. The agreement also includes the deployment of the OpenVista electronic health record (EHR) solution provided by Medsphere Systems Corporation. Phoenix’s Total IT Solution will be leveraged to meet the healthcare IT requirements of CBH’s nursing home, rural health clinic, assisted living center, and the hospital. Read more

Unisys to Divest Health Information Management Business to Molina Healthcare

Unisys Corporation has decided to sell its health information management (HIM) business to Molina Healthcare, Inc., a managed care organization, in an all-cash deal valued at $135 million. Subject to a standard working capital adjustment, the transaction amount will be paid using Molina’s credit facility at closing. Liable to closing conditions and customary regulatory approvals, as well as receipt of customer consents, the acquisition is slated to complete during the first half of 2010. Read more

Nashville, Tennessee-based Emdeon Business Services LLC has acquired eRx Network, LLC, a vendor of electronic pharmacy healthcare solutions, in order to enhance its footing in e-Prescribing and pharmacy claims management. The financial terms of the transaction were undisclosed. The agreement marks the merging of Emdeon’s pharmacy operations with eRx’s technology and services offering, and the former leveraging eRx’s growing clientele, and recognition for its product innovation, pharmacy switching technology and customer support.
