New Bill to Improve Veterans’ Medical Data Accessibility

Recognizing the cumbersomeness of healthcare information transfer process from military to civilian life, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas has introduced a new legislation, which would help veterans access their military records, service, and benefits data securely and electronically. Through the Improving Veterans’ Electronic Transition Services Act (iVETS Act), the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) would develop a Web-based portal to facilitate this capability. The portal will be based on the Defense Knowledge Online, a system that allows access to Official Military Personnel Files by all members in active duty until they become veterans. Read more

The analysis says that the modifications, consequent to the implementation of the law, will develop an environment which is profoundly different, as a result of which current markets, business practices, and silos may not be relevant anymore. Surrey-based LAN2LAN, systems integrator providing networks for enterprises, has been chosen by the Aneurin Bevan Health Board to develop, deploy and maintain a wireless infrastructure for subsequent 3-5 years. The vendor, a Gold Partner of Trapeze Networks, holding Master Reseller status, will support the wireless infrastructure with its Trapeze 802.11n WiFi platform for Aneurin Bevan’s Clinical Futures program. Unisys to Divest Health Information Management Business to Molina Healthcare

Unisys Corporation has decided to sell its health information management (HIM) business to Molina Healthcare, Inc., a managed care organization, in an all-cash deal valued at $135 million. Subject to a standard working capital adjustment, the transaction amount will be paid using Molina’s credit facility at closing. Liable to closing conditions and customary regulatory approvals, as well as receipt of customer consents, the acquisition is slated to complete during the first half of 2010. Read more
Proposed Rule for Defining Meaningful Use of EHR Technology

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have proposed two regulations that would help guide the government in awarding incentives for the meaningful use of certified EHRs under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Open for public response, the regulations will be issued as a final rule in 2010 following refinement, after a comment period of 60 days. Read more
ALERT: IBM Secures C$22.5 Million EHR Deal with Government of Manitoba

In a step towards facilitating the delivery of quality, efficient and cost-effective patient care across the province of Manitoba, the Government of Manitoba has roped in IBM Canada, to develop an interoperable electronic health record system (EHR). The design and development of the EHR system is in progress, and the deployment is expected to happen in 2010. The project is fund-supported by the Canada Health Infoway and Province of Manitoba. London Rolls out Summary Care Records

As a part of a national initiative to equip citizens with electronic care records, the Department of Health has announced the launch of the Summary Care Record (SCR) throughout London. Under the program, all citizens in the capital would be informed, in writing, about the outlines of the SCR initiative, giving them the option to decide whether to create their own SCR. The initial SCRs to be developed will be uploaded at the Princess Street Group Practice, based at Southwark. In addition, the records will also be created at two GP practices located at Chingford, east London. Read more
