NHS Information Center Engages SAS for Data Management and Business Analytics Platform

May 23, 2009

NHS Information Center (NHS IC) and SAS have entered into a strategic collaboration to bring into place technology that supports the former in improving care services, through better management and analysis of patient information across NHS trusts. The NHS IC is leveraging SAS technology to enhance the quality of service provided to the department of health and NHS trusts, for better and more efficient care delivery at the social, hospital community, and primary care levels.

The NHS Information Center, an independent repository of social care and health data, supports above 300 social and healthcare providers across England; providing facts and figures to enable efficient functioning of the NHS and social services. NHS IC assists providers in improving their services by providing useful information generated by analyzing data collected from various sources. The organization also develops various statistical publications related to hospital care, primary care, screening, health and lifestyles, social care, population and geography, as well as workforce and pay statistics.

Under the terms of the current partnership, SAS will build a business analytics platform and a standardized data management environment that would compile data from systems across different organizations, manage and evaluate data across NHS, to eventually help take better local decision and enhance patient services. Currently, the SAS professional services team is installing SAS solution across the NHS organization, and will also offer ongoing premium support, and training to achieve the optimum business advantages.

The partnership is expected to boost NHS IC’s offerings with better quality and management of data workflow, and also by implementing central governance and control over the information stored across various NHS systems. Leveraging a greater analytical flexibility, NHS IC analysts will now have more time to develop important reports of their analysis, thereby improving evidence-based decision-making.

NHS IC Chief Executive Tim Straughan, states that the organization intends to improve accessibility and usage of information to improve the quality of care, and address the economic downturn. He further states that with SAS, NHS IC hopes to achieve an effective, end-to-end process of sharing data, to ensure security of the information shared across the NHS, apart from quality and governance.

SAS, a privately held provider of business analytics software and services, operates across 50 countries through its 400 global offices. With a workforce of above 11,000 employees, the vendor supports clients at more than 45,000 sites, across over 100 countries. Through the SAS Allinace model, the company collaborates with various technology, consulting, application and channel partners to provide a comprehensive solution by combining its analytical software expertise with the partners’ industry and domain knowledge. The alliance work together to develop, sell and deliver complete intelligence solutions.
