March 3, 2009
Irving, Texas-based VHA Inc., a national healthcare alliance, has looped in Thomson Reuters’ Healthcare business as preferred vendor, to help its member organizations deliver quality care. As per the contract, Thomson will sell its Clinical Xpert™ suite of products to VHA members across the country.
Founded in 1977, VHA, a private, for-profit cooperative, offers supply chain management services. The company helps improve clinical and economic performance for above 1,400 not-for-profit hospitals and 23,000 non-acute healthcare organizations in the nation through its network of leading healthcare vendors. According to Amy Anthony, Senior Vice President of Supply Chain Services at VHA, the current agreement was inked in view of Thomson Reuters’ established recognition across the healthcare market and its continued focus on delivering quality solutions and customer services.
Clinical Xpert, acquired from Mercury MD by the Healthcare business of Thomson Reuters in 2006, is a mobile, evidence-based, point-of-care application with clinical references and tools that provide access to disease database, laboratory and toxicology information and medical calculators. The suite includes solutions that allow medication reconciliation, clinical surveillance, electronic backup of main hospital information systems (HIS), allowing care team members to communicate.
The Clinical Xpert Navigator, of the Clinical Xpert family of solutions, supports point-of-care decision-making for improved care outcomes and patient safety. The solution collects vital patient medical data from various HIS, to facilitate physicians with real-time access to patient information through their Web-enabled devices. The solution also supports patient data access through mobile devices including BlackBerry® smartphones, Windows Mobile® and Palm®.
In order to monitor high-risk patients, Thomson offers its Clinical Xpert CareFocus, a clinical surveillance solution. The solution automates the process of identifying, locating, and alerting the respective clinician on high-risk patients requiring clinical intervention. VHA member hospitals using CareFocus have reportedly shown significant improvements in patient length of stay, cost savings and mortality rates. Other components offered in the Clinical Xpert suite include handoff, charge capture and medication reconciliation solutions.
The current contract builds on Thomson Reuters’ preferred vendor status with VHA for its decision support solutions, which supports VHA’s financial and operational enhancements, clinical benchmarking, and market planning and strategy.
