ALERT: HHS Awards IT Services Contract to CSC

November 18, 2009

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded an Information Technology Infrastructure Operations indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract to Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). The contract, with a three-year base period and four one-year options, was granted during CSC’s FY2Q 2010, which ended on October 2, 2009.

CSC is one of the two companies selected to contend for task orders under two of the four IDIQ functional areas. As per the agreement terms, CSC will compete to deliver its Web services, which would include remote and Web-based access to the HHS server, and software and hardware services like network file sharing, deskside and help desk support, data backup and restoring, and administration of network.

CSC’s president of North American Public Sector Civil and Government Health Services Group, Tom Anderson, hopes that with its expertise, CSC will be able to enhance HHS’ technical competence by increasing reliability, standardizing procedures and processes, and enhancing security.

Falls Church, Virginia-based CSC has been working with the HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) since 1995, in reviewing and assessing Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries and taxpayers’ medical records, to enable the OIG to make sure that they obtain medically important and proper care related to a broad range of care services. CSC has also been engaged by the HHS office of the National Coordinator for Health IT for a prototype demonstration of health information exchange.

Extending its technology assistance to other public bodies, the vendor has also worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop a compatible Base System for the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS), and has been supporting the New York State Department of Health for the past 26 years. CSC recently won a $265 million Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) contract with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

In the international arena, CSC has contracted with federal health agencies like the Belgium Ministry of Health, and the Department of Health UK.
