McKesson Launches Integrated EHR/PM Solution for Small Physician Offices
May 19, 2009
McKesson Corporation released the latest version of its Medisoft practice management (PM) solution, Medisoft® v15, and announced the availability of a unified PM/electronic health record (EHR) solution, Medisoft Clinical.
Medisoft v15 includes new tools for reporting, and enhanced scheduling and billing capabilities, to facilitate further streamlined operations, better cash collections and lower overhead. The solution integrates Medisoft Reports (earlier known as Focus Reports) into Medisoft Network Professional and Medisoft Advanced. The Medisoft Reports provides information related to service facility financial information, financial information, managed care plans and marketing statistics through its wide array of reports. Medisoft Reports also offer templates that enable export of information to be utilized in other software and the capability to run custom based reports. The Medisoft PM solution is currently being employed by above 70,000 physicians in small physician offices.
The new PM/EHR solution, Medisoft Clinical includes the functionalities of Medisoft v15 integrated with McKesson’s 2008CCHIT Certified® Ambulatory EHR, Practice Partner® Patient Records. Practice Partner supports physician offices in automating clinical and business processes by interfacing with several major PM solutions. The scalability of the solution ranges from solo practitioners to multi-specialty physician clinics by using wide area networks. Medisoft Clinical is marketed and made available to clients primarily through a network of value added resellers (VARs). The VAR partners are responsible for the sale, implementation and support of McKesson’s EHR and PM solutions for small, independent physician practices. The solution is expected to be available at an affordable price, and the implementation methodology developed for it, is anticipated to simplify the installation process, facilitating a trouble-free transition from paper to automated health records.
McKesson, in 2007, released the Practice Partner® Complete. Provided through a performance-based subscription service, the hosted offering included billing and accounts receivable management services, and payor and patient connectivity powered by McKesson’s connectivity services company, RelayHealth.
The recent enhancements in McKesson’s healthcare IT offerings, follows close to the American Recovery Plan Reinvestment Act, initiated by the US government. The more than $19 billion investment in healthcare IT incentives, introduced to enhance EHR adoption by office-based physicians and hospitals, has resulted in a lot of activity across the US healthcare sector, with vendors enhancing their products to address the increased demands of providers.
As one of the world’s largest healthcare IT company, McKesson has responded to the Recovery Plan in submitting recommendations on funding for healthcare IT in 2008. Considering affordability as a factor abating the IT adoption rates, the company suggested the provision of significant funds to back initial investments, training and education, chronic care programs and access to emergency care, and incentives to encourage the utilization of healthcare IT in daily practices, and to detect and eliminate barriers of health information exchange. Additionally, the vendor also indicates that existing work should not be duplicated by new agencies or regulatory bodies, creation or authorization of a single software or hardware solution by funding initiatives should be avoided, and the government should not associate health IT grants with the adoption of highly restrictive privacy needs.
Founded in 1833, the San Francisco, CA-headquartered, FORTUNE 500 company offers healthcare services and information technology solutions. McKesson provides pharmaceutical distribution, medical care management services, medical-surgical distribution, consulting, and automation to its cliental of hospitals, physicians, homecare and payors.
